This trip took 6 Days and occurred over 700 miles of mostly unpaved forest roads from just north of Boise to the almost the Canadian border. The trip featured a wealth of beautiful scenery that I attempted to capture in photos and videos. I’ve broken down the drive day by day in text photos and video. Each days journey was tracked and recorded using GaiaGPS.
This was a moderate 8 mile round trip with about 1,000 ft of elevation gain before dropping a couple hundred feet back down to the lakes. The trail up is pretty gradual so this can be pretty easy in and out backpacking trip. There are several really nice camping spots along the shore of each of the lakes.
Josephus Lake is located in Challis National Forest about 20 miles north of highway 21 and probably 40-50 miles northwest of Stanley, Idaho. The road from highway 21 is not paved. The first 10+ miles are a well graded gravel road suitable for travel trailers.
Cottonwood Canyon Road (BLM 400) is about a 50 mile gravel/dirt road the stretches between highway 89 at the south end and the town of Cannonville and highway 12 at the north. It’s a fairly tame road with a few patches of washboard. Most cars and any SUV should have no problem on it unless it’s wet.
The Magruder Corridor or the Nez Perce Trail is about a 100 mile dirt and gravel road that cuts through two wilderness areas. The Selway-Bitterroot & Frank Church River of no Return. I drove the route from West to East beginning near Elk City, Idaho and coming out at Darby, Montana in early October.
